Amino acids for a sustainable conversion of Biomass

Interdisziplinäres Projekt

Beschreibung

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), is a  promising process to convert wet Biomass under elevated temperature and pressure to carbon-rich materials (Hydrochar). Amino Acids (Main units in Proteins) are one the main sources of organic Nitrogen in the Biomass. Therefore in order to improve the sustainability of the hydrothermal conversion of biomass, it's essential to study the behavior of organic Nitrogen during the Process.

In this project, an Amino acid will be used as the source of organic Nitrogen in a model solution, series of HTC reactions will be conducted to study the differences in Nitrogen distribution and behavior during different reaction conditions (Temperature, Reaction time etc.).

By controlling the Nitrogen distribution in the process, we will be able to design diverse applications for Hydrochar in different sectors e.g. source of energy, soil ameliorant, electrode materials etc.

In addition to having a nice and fruitful experience, you will have the opportunity to work with different devices and modern analytical instruments under our supervision. Having experience with these modern devices will improve your qualifications for your future studies or career.  Some of the devices we will use in this project are: Spectrophotometer, Elemental analyzer, HPLC Analyzer, TKN (Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen), ICP-OES Analysis BET Surface Analyzer, and others….

Lernziele

Die Teilnehmende lernen in diesem Projekt:

At the end of the project students will be able to:

1-Understand the Basic Knowledge in the area of Hydrothermal Carbonization and Nitrogen Recovery.

2-Handle the laboratory equipment safely and use modern devices to carry out experiments.

3-Design and implement experiments, collect data and analyze the results to support or refute a hypothesis/research question.

4-Learn how to work both independently and cooperatively with other students.

5-Create a poster and explain your work through a presentation.

Anmerkungen für Studierende

You will be provided with all information required before conducting experiments. Safety instructions and guidance for working in the laboratory will also be provided.

Meetings will be carried out on a regular basis to discuss the progress of the project.

I will help you to design and present your poster.

I will do my best to make this experience not only beneficial but also fun :)
