Buzzing Biodiversity in Mediterranean Habitats: The Wild Bees of Sardinia

Beschreibung

The Mediterranean region is a hotspot for wild bee diversity. Within this region, the island of Sardinia with its complex geological history and geographic isolation is a key region for studies of wild bee diversity. The island is characterized by different types of natural vegetation ranging from sea level to mountains which provide different niches opportunities for wild bees and likely promoted diversification in the past. Nonetheless, the diversity of Sardinian wild bees has not been well researched and recent scientific publications reporting new records of wild bees for this and other European islands indicate that more biodiversity studies of these regions are needed.

In this project, students will develop taxonomic species identification skills, learn about bee-plant interactions ecology and to analyze biodiversity data to improve the current understanding of wild bee diversity in Sardinia.

Results will be summarized in scientific contributions in writing or conference poster formats. Opportunities to participate at scientific conferences to present project results and at public outreach events to inform the public, especially children and families, about wild bee conservation and diversity will be provided to participants aiming to experience the full cycle of scientific research.
