Intra-specific variation in protease inhibitors their relation to herbivore resistance in natural populations of Solanum dulcamara

Beschreibung

S. dulcamara commonly referred to as Bittersweet Nightshades, are an emerging model system for studying plant-insect interactions. S. dulcamara plants are phenotypically plastic which are reflected by numerous inducible traits.

In this project, we would be working with specialist and generalist leaf chewing beetles lepidopterans. The goal is to explore, whether S. dulcamara can differentially respond to different chewing herbivores. For this, clones of selected chemically distinct plant genotypes are exposed to different insects. Imprints of different herbivores on the leaf chemistry are assessed for defence-related parameters such as polyphenols, protease inhibitors (PI) and/or the induction of signalling pathways. Polyphenolics and phytohormones can be analysed by liquid chromatography, defense gene expression by real time PCR and PIs with biochemical assay.
