Examination of the suitability of different hydroponic substrates

Beschreibung

An alternative method to plant cultivation in the field, is the hydroponic cultivation.
in a nurtient solution. Substrates are used here to support the plants physically and to allow optimal root growth. The most common substrates used in hydroponics are rockwool and coconut coir. These substrates are well established but are ecologically problematic.

The aim of this project is the examination and comparison of alternative, organic substrates regarding their performance in hydroponics. Therefore, alternative substrates are explored based on a literature review. Subsequently, the most promising substrates are assessed in a pratical test in a hydroponic system regarding their physical, chemical and biological suitability as well as with respect to sustainablility, economic feasability and availability.

The goal of the first phase is the selection of the substrates and the design of the experimental setup.
Subsequently the experiment will be executed in a greenhouse setting.
The literature review should contribute to the evaluation of the
results of the experiment to ensure a holistic assessment of the examined substrates.
