Plants-Water-Earthworms: Terrabioponic urban gardening

Vertical terrabioponic gardens allow for organic food self-production in cities by utilising exclusively available resources – water, sun energy and organic kitchen wastes. The terrabioponic cultivation method is based on natural ecosystem processes and cycles and thus brings back a piece of nature into city households.
In this project a terrabioponic garden system will be monitored to analyse the water, energy and nutrient flows andto assess the productivity and potential of this cultivation method.

Initially, a cropping plan with suitable crop communities will be developed. Secondly, the nutrient contents of organic kitchen wastes will be summarized based on a small literature review in order to identify types of organic kitchen wastes that match the nutrient demand of the crops.
Subsequently, a terrabioponic garden, which is in operation since two years, will continuously be cultivated organically over three seasons (autumn/winter – spring – summer) with the selected crop communities. The vermicompost is fed defined amounts and composition of organic kitchen wastes
Over the whole period the water, energy and organic kitchen waste input as well as the biomass and nutrient output will be continuously sampled and measured.
