The Amazing Diversity of Mediterranean Bees

Beschreibung

The Mediterranean region is considered a biodiversity hotspots for wild bee species worldwide. Wild bees are a key element of the Mediterranean fauna and play a key role as pollinators of its flora. Their contribution to plant reproduction is essential for the stability and persistence of natural communities in this region.

Wild bee diversity is still poorly studied and understood in different Mediterrean countries, with Croatia being one area where more studies about wild bee richness are needed.

In this project, students will participate on ongoing research project to generate a reference collection and produce a list of wild bee species from the coastal region of Croatia. Taxonomic skills, entomological methods as well as the use of molecular techniques, such as species barcoding, will be employed in this project to identify the richness of wild bees from the study site. Opportunity for field work depending on students engagement.
